The Toyota GT-ONE (codename TS020), as the name suggested, was a GT1 developed by the Japanese manufacturer for the World Sportscar Championship. While debuting in 1998 in the GT1 class, that seized the following year, the GT-ONE was adapted to race in the new LMGTP class, where it scored a second place at the 1999 24 hours of Le Mans. After lessons were learned from Toyota’s withdrawal of the TS010 program in 1994, they experimented in more GT cars with a modified Supra (named Supra LM), and a car more based on the Porsche GT1, the SARD MC8-R. Toyota skipped the 97 Le Mans to develop a new car, tested and built by Toyota Team Europe (TTE) in Cologne, Germany, which would be the GT-ONE. Unfortunately, the curse for Toyota continued, and in the closing stages, was gaining on the leading BMW, but suffered a tire failure while lapping traffic, and was forced to slow down and make a pit stop. Despite becoming second, the car is still remembered and cherished by many fans. There exists one road legal variant, due to GT1 regulations.
