- This is the 1988 Jaguar XJR-9 LM, in it’s most iconic purple livery. This specific car, the #2, driven by Jan Lammers Johnny Dumfries and Andy Wallace, has only won 1 race, but that was no less than the 24houres of Le Mans. It was the first non-Porsche victory since 1980, an incredible performance. Even if you know what happened in the closing stages of the race. The gearbox broke, leaving only 4th gear available. Driving at that time was Jan, and he realised that is he shifted even once, the gearbox would blow up and the race would be over. So the closing stages, everything was done in 4th gear, even the pits.
It’s an astonishing car, powered by a 7.0L V12 engine based on the XJS road model, capable of 750HP. The rear wheels were covered to improve earodynamic efficiency, and ground effect was used to stick the car to the road surface. It won the constructors title as well as the drivers title in the world sportscar championship in 1988.
