In 1970, while the competitive clash between the dominant Porsche 917 and the challenger Ferrari 512S was still raging on the track, the International Sports Commission announced that, for the 1972 season, sports cars with a 5-liter displacement would no longer be allowed to participate in the International Makes Championship, leaving the field open to “prototype” cars with 3-liter engines: the reactions of the two manufacturers were diametrically opposed and, while the Germans decided to discontinue their official commitment at the end of the 1971 season (and then concentrate on the CanAm Championship in which they were already competing), the Italians decided to abandon the development of the “512” for 1971 and to make a new “prototype” car with Formula 1 technology and 180° flat-12 boxer engine, starting from common components with their new Ferrari 312 B single-seater that had just made its debut in the top series.
Here reproduced in 8-stud wide, minifig scale, the number 2 which arrived 1st at 1972’s 24hr Daytona race.
The car had been driven by Mario Andretti and Jacky Ickx.
